OUR STORY SO FAR...
Community Interest Luton developed our outreach programme, ‘Young Steps’, supported by Children In Need in 2019. ‘The ‘Young Steps’ project seeks to help young people aged 11-19 overcome their barriers to education, provide them with guidance in applying for jobs and training, and encourage their aspirations.
Children and young people with lack of skills and facing other barriers to education and employment, are likely to experience continued poverty, deprivation, poor mental health and other socio-economic deprivation for most of their life. In some areas of Luton, child poverty rates now stand above 50%, and this, and the need for support, is only increasing.

We engage with children and young people from some of the most impoverished wards in Luton and offer them access to a range of free employability training, qualifications and volunteering and work experience opportunities. We have integrated dedicated mentorship support into the programme to help our young participants gain more self-confidence, encourage their aspirations and develop life-long and employability skills.
Since 2022, Young Steps has delivered a series of school holiday provisions for 7-11 year olds, with the aim of engaging young people in a range of activities to increase confidence, self-worth and overall wellbeing. With a focus on skills building, exercise and eating together, we believe our provision is a holistic approach to supporting some of Luton’s most vulnerable children.
